Last part of our small trip before christmas, Barcelona.
We ended our trip by spending 3 days in Barcelona. The weather was much better than in Italy we had a pretty warn weather for a winter. Barcelona turned out to be the city we enjoyed the most. People are very nice, they speak a bit more English than in Italy and the food is cheaper.
The city itself is really beautiful, we visited Gaudi's museums and park and it was amazing. We wished we could have stayed there longer to see a bit more of this city but we had to go back to my home for christmas.
We both want to go back there someday...

Here is the second stop of our trip, Venice.
We spent almost 4 days in Venice and the weather was still not with us... pretty cold because of the water all around and a bit rainy. It's a pretty interesting and romantic city, very quite because there are no cars on the island. Main disadvantage, everything is more expensive than anywhere else in Italy and the poplation is mainly tourists and old local people... As you can see on the photos we did a short gondola cruise on the canal, it was really nice but as they only target tourists it's pretty expensive.
Another enjoyable thing in Italy, Gelatos :) these italian ice cream were great^^

Rome was the first destination of our little trip in Europe for Julie and I.
We left my place for a 10 days trip between Italy and Spain to discover places we've never been before, neither her nor me. We spent 3 days in Rome during which we walked a lot and visited many touristic places. The only problem was the weather, it was raining most of the time... But as you can see on the photos wa had a good time anyway. The backpacker was really nice, in the center of Rome, a 2 bedrooms appartment shared with 2 other persons and free diner everyday :)

Graduation Ceremony

These are the photos of my graduation ceremony for my Master degree in The University of Sydney, the 16th of May 2008.
This day at the University of Sydney was the day where all the ceremonies for graduands who finished their degrees last december took place. The ceremony for the faculty of sciences graduands was at 11am so I had to be there about 1 hour before to pick up my gown...
The ceremony took place in the Great Hall in the main and most impressive building of the university called the Main Quadrangle. Once inside the hall, it lasted only 1 hour, it is not too long if you consider that about 300 graduands where there and were called one by one. Even if my family was obviously not there and my friends neither (because they were working) I had a good time there because my girlfriend came. It was a good experience for me but once is enough :)

The 6th of May was Camille's birthday and she decided with Christelle and Bana to have a party in their house in Balmain. We were all French, except Julie. We had dinner there as well as drinks, and then we took 2 taxis to go to the city to Cargo Bar in Darling Harbour. It was a very nice night all together, we left the Cargo around 2am and some went somewhere else after that, in Kings Cross...

This was nice because it was the first time for Julie and me but the way back was a bit boring because we walked along the road to shorten the walk...

During the mid-semester break we decided to go out from Sydney on a 3 days trip between French guys. We decided to go to Jervis Bay which is a very nice place and not really far from Sydney. So we've rented a car and booked a bungalow and few days later we were on the road to Jervis Bay.
We were 5 guys going on this trip so we've booked a bungalow for 5-6 people and it was really nice. The weather was good, we had a bit of rain but it wasn't really a problem. Our bungalow was in front of the beach so we obviously went to the beach every day, swimming a bit, even if the water was a bit cold... We enjoyed some BBQ for our lunches and also good food for dinner by our special chef 'fabe'.
We've seen many animals around our bungalow, possum, heaps of lorikeets, kookaburra but unfortunately no kangaroos or wallabies...
We had a really good time all frenchies together, far from the big city, we enjoyed the fresh air and the beaches for 3 days.

For Julie's birthday I booked a table in a French restaurant in Bondi Junction called "Bistro de Paris", quite small but very nice. All the staff is French as well as the boss, the ambiance is really nice, small and cozy. I finally eat very good bread and cheese :) and every dish we ordered was really good. We really enjoyed this moment and we're both wishing to go back to this restaurant soon.

BBQ on Coogee Beach

This time we decided to go to Coogee Beach to have a BBQ for dinner. So I've been there with Julie in the afternoon to enjoy this beautiful day and then the others joined us there. Actually we didn't have the BBQ on Coogee Beach itself but a bit on the right of the beach, it's more quiet and quite nice. As usual the French Team was there with some of our sharemates.
The BBQ was really nice but as we stayed there a bit late it got really cold at the end so we decided to come back to the city by bus. After that Julie was really freezing so we just got back home and some of the others went out to finish the night.

This was during our holidays, Julie and I, before restarted my studies. We finally found some time to get away from sydney for few days. Actually we hired a car for 3 days and booked a nice little hotel in the town of Vincentia. Unfortunatly, as you can see on the pictures we were not lucky with the weather, it was raining a bit for 2 days and the 3rd day the weather was ok but still not really warm. So despite the weather we drove around Jervis Bay, to the different beaches such as Hyams Beach which is a one sand beach, very nice place.
We also tried to follow some hint from the Lonely Planet but we've got some problems... We went to a "mountain" a bit in the south from Jervis Bay which was supposed to be a nice place with a good view but we couldn't reach the top... It was a very narrow path so we drove very slowly and after more than an hour on this road, we didn't have enough petrol left so we took the way back. On the way back we almost killed a small wallaby, but I think he escaped quick enough to survive coz we couldn't find it..
Except this adventure the rest of the trip was great and we had very good time together.

Port Douglas - The Rainforest Habitat

For our fourth day we decided to go to Port Douglas, about 50 minutes from Cairns. There is a park called The Rainforest Habitat where you can have breakfast our lunch with the birds, there are fling around the tables. We went there for the "Lunch with the Lorikeets" and during the lunch 2 women from the staff brought 2 Lorikeets (small colorful parrots) on our shoulders. We spent long time in this park, especially with the kangaroos and the koalas, we gave some food to the Roos and Wallabies and we could touch a Koala as well as a baby crocodile. We were surprised of the softness of this croco, it looks so hard but in fact it isn't.

The third day in Cairns we took a tour on a sailing boat to go to Green Island for scuba diving and snorkeling. I had an initiation of scuba diving, it was amazing, so many fishes swimming around us and around the boat. The biggest fishes were swimming around the boat as well as the sharks. Just after I finished diving 2 reef sharks arrived next to the boat, I missed them just for few minutes...
After that we had lunch on the boat then they dropped us on the island for about 2 hours. There is a crocodile park in the middle of the island where we can see the biggest crocodile in captivity, about 6 meters... There we saw the feeding show, they start by feeding the huge green turtles then a couple of crocodile. It was really impressive, they were so close to us, and jumping from the water to get the food.

Daintree and Cap Tribulation

This was our first tour, we decided to start with the rain forest in Daintree region and Cap Tribulation a bit more in the north. The tour was great, the guide really nice and he explained us many things about this tropical forest and the animals living there. Daintree is about 2 hours in the north from Cairns. There we started by walking in the forest, then we went on a boat for a 1 hour cruise on Daintree river where we've met our first wild crocodile (Scarface) swimming in the river not far from our boat.
After that we had lunch in a resort in Cap Tribulation and we went walking on the beach for a while.

Some pictures from Cairns, the city itself and our hotel. the city is very small and was almost desert because the wet season is coming and most of people are moving in the south, Brisbane or Sydney. It was really quiet. Our hotel was great, we had very good time there even if we didn't spend so much time in Cairns itself.

This place is located in Darling Harbour, I use to pass just next to this garden when I go to Darling Harbour but I never stopped there. It's a small garden but a very nice place to visit. It made me remember my trip in japan, it's a bit similar to some places we've visited in Kyoto but with Chinese style.

This day we've been to Taronga Zoo with my mother, she wanted to see kangaroos and koalas and as I've never been there before I thought it was a good place to visit. Actually it's a very nice place, heaps of animals from different origins. We spent the afternoon there and we really enjoyed.

I went there for a BBQ with Korean (6 Korean and I...), so we took the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly and then walked to this little beach on the right of Manly beach. It's a very nice place, quiet, but not so many bbq so we had to wait more than half an hour to start cooking. After eating we walked a bit to the top of this place, there is a great view on Manly beach and some cliffs around. After that, we came back to the city and had dinner in a Korean restaurant near Darling harbor.

Beautiful week end in Coogee and Cronulla.
On Saturday night I went to Stephanie's in Coogee for a dinner with one of her friends then I slept there because it was too late to come back to the city, no more buses after 12am...
On Sunday we joined Julie and François in Cronulla beach, we had some crepes in a French Creperie close to the beach. Then we decided to go for a hike in the national park. We took the car and went to Botany Bay national park for 2 or 3 hours, walking on the rocks and in the sand.

This Sunday we went to Coogee beach with Stephanie, Damien, Julie and François to have a barbecue. The weather was really good and it was quite hot. After the bbq we played volley-ball then had an aperitif on the beach.

Now the second part of our trip.
After Takayama we took another bus to go directly to Tokyo. Initially we planned to stay in Tokyo for 5 days but we changed our plans and went there 3 days earlier because we couldn't find any backpacker around Fuji. Tokyo is a crazy city, really huge and each quarter is different. There is not so much historical things to see over there except a castle, but there are heaps of museums to learn about the history of Japan, but sometimes it's all in Japanese :s.
Anyway that's a great city, the most busy part we've seen was Shibuya, that's where there is the biggest cross of the world and advertisement screens around it, it's busy anytime of the day. I like this city, because you can live in a quiet part of the city and travel by train or subway to go out in Shibuya, Shinjuku or Roppongi. I think it's really difficult to live in Tokyo, too busy and stressful. Kyoto would be a better city to live in my opinion.

Tokyo

After this week in Tokyo we took a night bus to go to Osaka. It took us 8 hours to get there and we were lucky at this time because the bus could have been canceled because of the Typhoon which was going up to Tokyo from the south. Fortunately the Typhoon changed his trajectory and didn't cross our route. The day after we arrived in Osaka we saw on tv that there was an earthquake far in the north, but strong enough to be felt in Tokyo. In Osaka we just visited the castle and we slept a lot because we were very tired of the trip.

This trip was great, Japan is a beautiful country with so much things to see and a very interesting culture. I'm really thinking about going back there later but I should learn Japanese before because without speaking Japanese it's not easy all the time.

Japan part 1

We left Sydney on the 2nd of July with Max and Loic and we went back on the 19th. Our trip started in Osaka, or should I say Kyoto because we took the train from Osaka to Kyoto as soon as we arrived there. The friend of Max caught us at the airport and we went to our backpacker. We stayed 3 nights there, it's a really nice city, not too big with lots of things to visit, heaps of beautiful temples.

After that we took a bus to go to Nagoya , 2:45 hours later we were there, we stayed there 1 night. Nagoya is bigger then Kyoto, aslo with temples, beautiful gardens and far bigger buildings than in Kyoto. We went at the top of the TV Tower, wich is a bit the equivalent of our Sydney Tower, great view of the whole city.

The third stage of our trip was the small (100 000 people) town of Takayama for 2 nights, in the north of Nagoya. It took us 2:15 hours to get there by bus. This little historical town is a very beautiful place surrounded by the mountains. We walked a lot there and went in the mountains but the weather was not so good so we couldn't see anything s:. One night we went in a little bar which looked a bit strange, there were almost nobody, but a bit later they started a karaoke, it was fun, and we had a great performance by Loic on the Red Hot Chili Peppers song, Under the bridge :)

Koala Park

This morning we took the train at 9am to go to the Koala Park with Stephanie and Damien. This park is located next to Pennant Hills, about 45min by train from the city.
There Julie was waiting for us with her car to go to the park. This park is really small, we stayed there only for less than 2 hours. We saw all those beautiful animals and we touched the koalas and kangaroos.
After that we went to Julie's house around 15min from the park, we had diner and then we decided to go in her "garden" for a bush walk. The property is about 7 acres so you can imagine how huge is this garden.
It was a really nice walk and we came home in her place very tired.
Then she drove us to the station and we came back to the city around 6pm.

We took the plane from Sydney to Hervey Bay, the town next to Fraser Island.
We took a tour to go on the island, a Self driving 4WD Safari tour. We left Hervey Bay in a 4WD with 8 other backpackers (2 English girls, 2 German guys, 1 Italian guy, 1 French girl and 2 Irish guys) with a map and our planning for those 3 days.
It was really nice, we drove on the beaches and in the forest, and we slept 2 nights in the tents. The first day we saw the Basin Lake, the second day we went to Eli Creek, we saw the wreck of the S.S. Maheno, then we went to the north of the island to Indian Head and the Champagne Pool.
The last day we went back to the ferry to go back to Hervey Bay and on the road we stopped at the Lake McKenzie which is awesome, but we were not lucky because the weather was not so good this day.

This day we decided to go for a hike with my French share mates Stephanie and Damien on the north shore.
We took the ferry in Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo then we walked along the coast for 3 hours. We wanted to walk to Balmoral beach but we were starving around the half of the hike so we decided to catch a bus and go directly to the beach to have lunch/diner.
It took us 3 hours to do only the half of the hike because we spent too much time taking pictures of the city and the vegetation.
We went to a really nice restaurant in front of the beach and then we took many pictures of this beautiful place.
On one part of this beach there is a shark net to prevent shark attacks we assumed, but I don't think there are more sharks there than on any other beach.

A great day in the Blue Mountains with Fabrice and Julien. We walked a lot but I think we've seen all the most interesting spots. We left Katoomba's station around 9am with a little map and walked down the rain forest, it's a very quiet place.
We walked until 4pm all along the cliffs on the way to the 3 sisters and then we went to Leura's station to catch a train and go back to the city. It was a very tiring day but we all liked it.

We went in Thailand with my friends Philippe and Maxime. There we lived with the family of Philippe, in one of his uncle's house. Philippe's parents and Pao (Philippe's cousin) drove us in many places we had to see in Bangkok and then in Pattaya. It was GREAT !!!
Thai people are so nice and Thai food is delicious (but too spicy for european as us sometimes).
Each night we asked Pao to drive us in a nice place he knew, he has member cards in many bars/clubs in Bangkok so we could enter almost anywhere.
This trip was a bit short, we were really sad to come back to Sydney after that but we had really good time there and maybe we'll go to Thailand again someday, who knows...
